U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District
July 3, 2014 | 2:27
U.S. Army Captain David Vasquez, a project engineer for the Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway describes the installation of the first massive gate for the spillway, July 3, 2014. The 179-ton steel gate is one of six Tainter gates that will control water flow from Folsom Lake into the new auxiliary spillway. The gates will sit 50 feet lower than the gates on Folsom’s main dam to allow water to be released earlier and more quickly during large storms. Six bulkhead gates will be installed behind the Tainter gates to provide access to the Tainter gates for maintenance. Installation of the gates will continue until the spring of 2015.
