BLUF: Cold weather can take a toll on your M113-series vehicle.
Crewmen, extreme cold weather can cause a variety of problems for your M113-series armored personnel carrier. Here’s how you can keep your vehicle mission ready no matter how low the temps go:
- Install air inlet and exhaust grille covers when the engine isn’t running.
- Always do all preventive maintenance checks and services.
- Start the engine coolant heater (if so equipped) when the vehicle will be stationary for more than a few hours.
- Park your vehicle in shelter whenever you can. If there's no shelter available, try to park in an area protected by the wind.
- Drain the fuel filters regularly and keep the fuel tanks filled as often as you can.
- Remove the hull drain plugs any time water collects in the hull.
- Don't operate lights or electrical equipment for long periods of time if the coolant heater is on.
- Don't run the engine while the coolant heater is operating.
