USS Macon (ZRS 5), a U.S. Navy Akron-class rigid airship, sank on Feb. 12, 1935 off the coast of California in what is now the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Archaeologists from Naval History and Heritage Command’s Underwater Archaeology Branch (UA) recovered some of the wreckage. Here, Tom Frezza talks with the UA about the wreckage and its origins.
