First American to orbit the Earth
Naval History and Heritage Command
Feb. 20, 2019 | 1:15
A video produced using b-roll footage and historic imagery showcasing the launch and recovery of Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962. Piloting the space capsule was Lt.Col. John Glenn, USMC; when he splashed down into the North Atlantic after spending a little over four hours in orbit, he became the first American to orbit the Earth. Gearing Class Destroyer USS Noa (DD 841) successfully hoisted him aboard, and he was transferred to the USS Randolph (CV 15). (US Navy Video by Max Lonzanida/Released)
