In order to mitigate errors, reduce undesired variability, and identify opportunities for improvement, the Military Health System has embraced its High Reliability Organization Guiding Principles and has assembled a set of evidence-based strategies called the Leadership Engagement Toolkit that have been successfully used in health care settings across the nation. One of these strategies is called the Unit-Based Huddle.

Unit Based Huddles are multidisciplinary, short, 15-20 minute, energetic planning sessions held daily in the work area of each team. The huddle is led by a team leader and focuses on the top priorities for a group of patients with each interdisciplinary staff member sharing their updates.

One major huddle benefit is increased situational awareness that can lead to better decision making and error reduction. Check out the video to see how you can implement or refine this strategy in your organization.
