Before the war in Vietnam, the U.S. military established a few Commissaries in the Saigon area to serve military advisors and their families. As combat became the Americans' primary military role and military dependents left the country, the role and customer base of those Commissaries changed. Still, the stores remained open for business until the day Communist forces captured the city in 1975.
