Technically, he’s an aerospace engineer at the Space and Missile Systems Center, located at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, California. In this latest edition profiling the upcoming launch of the first GPS III satellite, the chief of the Global Positioning Systems and Requirements Branch discusses what goes into setting the plans for the future of GPS, which includes anticipating the day-to-day needs of both the warfighter and the civilian world 20 to 30 years from now.

“Launch is just the beginning,” says Killings, noting that once the mission is launched, the real business of 24/7/365 seamless operation of the GPS enterprise is “the Everest” or pinnacle of position, navigation and timing (PNT) services -- supporting vital U.S. and allied operations worldwide, and underpins critical financial, transportation and agricultural infrastructure that billions of users have come to depend on daily.
