Camp Lejeune's Red-cockaded Woodpecker
Marine Corps Installations East
April 23, 2024 | 5:01
Gary Haught, Threatened and Endangered Species program manager, and Aliza Sager, Red-cockaded woodpecker biologist and field coordinator, both with the Environmental Management Division, Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune, share how the Threatened and Endangered Species Program protects the Red-cockaded woodpecker population on MCB Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 23, 2024. Since 1986, MCB Camp Lejeune has worked with conservation groups, state and local governments and private landowners to preserve forests in and around the installation to give the endangered Red-cockaded woodpecker more habitat to expand their populations. The natural buffers of old-growth trees which the birds favor, protect the base from encroachment that could hamper training. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Loriann Dauscher)
