Inside AFIMSC: Ultramarathoners -- NO LOWER THIRDS
Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center

Two members of the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center team at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, stretch the limits of running as “ultramarathoners.” Lt. Col. Jeff Klein and Capt. Kyle Imhoff with the Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Detachment 1 consider ultramarathoning — running races greater than 26.2 miles and up to 100 miles — a hobby. Unlike standard marathon races, ultramarathon runners walk and stop to rest occasionally to fuel their bodies at aid stations. Staying hydrated and fueled is critical during extreme distance races. They also take a break to change gear like socks and shoes when necessary. Both Lt. Col. Klein and Capt. Imhoff offered two main pieces of advice for those thinking of taking up the sport: start slow and create accountability to keep you going. Although they started running ultramarathons for different reasons, distance training has become a way of life for these Airmen. Both agree being able to push past the physical discomfort builds confidence and mental resilience.
